Hemodiafiltration versus High-flux Hemodialysis and Risk of Mortality: A Multinational Target Trial Emulation
A Fresenius study of almost 20,000 patients in eight European countries from 2014-2019 found that hemodiafiltration (HDF) reduced all-cause mortality risk by 28% over conventional high flux HD. Even better, all-cause mortality was reduced 33% with high volume (23 liters per session) HDF compared with conventional high flux HD.

Evaluating Patterns and Outcomes in the Prescription of Incremental Peritoneal Dialysis in Support of Shared Decision-Making
This study of 527 patients from 2012-2023 found that incremental PD was safe to prescribe. They found patients were still on their incremental PD prescription at one year (64%) and two years (36%). Those more likely to increment sooner were younger, male, and had lower albumin. Younger patients with diabetes were more likely to switch to HD. Mortality rates were low at .11 events/person year. A clinical score for shared decision-making and treatment expectations was constructed and tested, but needs validation.

Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter Flushing in Children: A National Survey of Practice Patterns
Researchers surveyed 60 U.S. pediatric PD programs for PD catheter flush protocols between placement and starting PD treatment. Of the 43 respondents, 83% had a protocol. However, variation in their protocols led the researchers to recommend multi-center studies to establish a standardized catheter flushing protocol based on evidence-based guidelines.

Training Programs for Families of Children on Home Peritoneal Dialysis: A Scoping Review
This review looked at 12 studies of training programs for caregivers of children at home on PD. Training practices varied widely and often did not align with the ISPD pediatric guidelines. Few programs clearly defined training objectives or criteria, and none of the studies reported using tools to assess health literacy. The authors recommend more research into how caregiver training affects children and families in the setting of kidney failure.

Remote Monitoring in Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Improves Treatment Adherence and Reduces Hospitalization Burden: A Prospective Multicenter Cohort Study
This study of 73 PD patients compared CAPD, APD, and remote monitoring-assisted APD. Patients using remote monitoring had better treatment plan adherence, fewer hospital days, and lower inpatient costs than those using conventional APD. They also had better volume control than patients on CAPD.

Physical Activity in Short Daily Home Dialysis vs In-Center HD
Comparing patients on in-center HD (ICHD) to those on short daily home HD (SDHD), this study found those on SDHD were more active and less sedentary, slept longer, and had shorter recovery time after dialysis compared to those on ICHD. Labs showed similar levels of anemia and metabolic control, but SDHD preserved nutrition and reduced pre-dialysis beta-2 microglobulin (B2M).

Crossover Study from Conventional PD Dialysate to Icodextrin
A prospective study of 50 PD patients provided 6 months of standard PD fluid followed by 6 months of icodextrin—which significantly improved 24 hour UF volume, Kt/V, serum albumin, and hemoglobin.
