Optimal ESRD start patients receive a preemptive kidney transplant, start a home therapy, or begin in-center HD with a venous access, and optimal education is needed for these events to occur. U.S. Equity in Home Dialysis Choice
Why are African- and Mexican-Americans less likely to use home dialysis? Focus groups in five U.S. cities found that physician guidance was the most important factor, though African Americans wanted validation and additional modality education when ready, while Mexican American participants had more trust. Fear of sole responsibility and loss of in-center fellow patient support were barriers.

Peer Support + Nurse-led Modality Education Increases Patient Choice of PD
Of 238 patients from 500 outpatient clinics in 2018 to 2020, 112 received both nursing education (NE) and peer support to make an ESKD modality choice. The combination helped patients make informed choices that aligned with their values and preferences.
