Shared Decision-making (SDM) in ESKD Modality Choice and Outcomes
Among 554 patients studied, 22.2% (123) participated in SDM to choose an ESKD treatment. Survival was significantly higher in the SDM group (p = 0.001).

Impact of Assisted PD
A retrospective look at 1,576 incident patients at one clinic between 2002 and 2017 examined the effects of offering assisted PD on the rates and cumulative incidence of PD starts. Those who used assisted PD tended to be older. Use of the program significantly increased the rate of PD initiation, but there was a fall in usage over time.

Is the Future Near? Portable Dialysis and Implantable Devices
Portable and wearable PD and HD devices are in development that have the potential to improve patient mobility and autonomy, and perhaps increase technique survival. Bioartificial kidneys that may partly replace some of the endocrine functions of kidneys are on a longer development horizon, followed by miniaturized, implantable devices. Multiple challenges must be overcome for any of these options to become available.
