Dick & Liz’s Journey from Peritoneal Dialysis to Home Hemodialysis with Tablo: “I’ve Reclaimed My Life”

Liz Henry is a care partner to her husband Dick, a kidney disease patient for more than 30 years. Dick has been using Tablo at home since July 2020, and since then, he has been feeling good again, consistently, and enjoying a better quality of life. The improvements that the Henry’s have seen in Dick’s health and well-being, along with their ability to control their schedule and do the things that they love over the 9 months since they started his home treatments, has exceeded their expectations.

For five years prior to Tablo, Dick was on time-consuming, seven-day/75-hours-a-week peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatments, and was, unfortunately, quite sick. Last year his health deteriorated even further due to a number of infections related to peritonitis. In-center dialysis wasn’t a good option either due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The timing was perfect for the Henry’s with Tablo’s FDA approval for home use, and they made the quick and easy decision to begin hemodialysis at home with Tablo.

Training on Tablo was intuitive and easy, and the Henry’s were comfortable with setting up and performing treatments at home in just two weeks. The treatments themselves, which Dick has 4 days/16 hours a week (a savings of nearly 60 hours a week versus his PD experience), are also simple to set up and run, with Tablo’s user-friendly touchscreen and animated instructions, and automatic and secure wireless data transfer to his healthcare provider. The compact and portable Tablo system also fits easily into their home, only needing access to tap water and an electrical outlet to operate, and its supplies are minimal.

During his treatments, Dick and Liz are able to be productive, planning out their weekly golf schedule and other activities that they enjoy but weren’t possible prior to Dick starting home hemodialysis, such as drives up the California Coast near where they live, overnight getaways, walks, gardening, and making plans with their children and grandchildren. The couple consider the ability to once again enjoy activities of dialysis-free daily living to be life changing. In Dick’s words, “It’s great, I feel like I’ve reclaimed my life!”
