Disparities Remain in U.S. Home HD: We Need to Do Better!
A recent
journal article using USRDS data to compare home HD to
center HD found that patients who were non-white, older, and
with more comorbidities were less likely to do home HD. Among
minorities, Black patients were more likely to do home HD than Asian,
Hispanic, or patients of other races. Neither demographic nor medical
reasons explained the difference. Overall, minority patients had a
lower risk of death and hospitalization than white
patients, when adjusted for other factors. Home HD patients had
a significantly lower death risk than center HD patients and
were more likely to have fewer hospitalizations. Starting in 2025, CMS
will have two new QIP measures for social drivers of health in dialysis
facilities.
