BMI, Diabetes, and Mortality: HD and PD Differ
Among 3,235 patients with diabetes on dialysis followed for 3.9 + 3.5 years, most (2,452) were on HD, with 783 on PD. During the study, 53% (1,688) patients died (1,275: HD; 413: PD). In HD patients, mortality risk was higher in those with BMIs <18.5 kg/m2 and lower when BMI ranged from 25.1 to 40 kg/m2. No relationship was found between BMI and mortality risk on PD.

Survival with PD vs. Home HD and When to Go Home
Using a national cohort of 1,993 patients transitioning to home HD and 16,514 to PD between 2007 to 2011, 1,195 home HD were matched to 1,195 using propensity scores and adjusting for demographics, comorbidities, dialysis duration, and BMI. Those on home HD had significantly better survival (9.6 vs. 12.9 deaths per 100 patient-years; p<0.001). However, when patients switched to PD within the first 12 months of starting dialysis, survival was comparable between PD and home HD: patients who transitioned after 12 months had an 83% higher risk of death.

Bioimpedance Assessment of Conventional vs. Daily HD
In a small physiological study, 12 patients were switched from conventional (3x/week) to daily (6x/week) HD treatments. Baseline and monthly blood pressure, BMI, and bioimpedance measurements were gathered on participants. Among the 9 patients who completed the data collection, body composition was not altered--but fluid overload was reduced and fewer antihypertensive medications were needed.
