  • Uptake of Home Dialysis After Kidney Transplant Failure by Sex

    An ANZDATA registry study analyzed dialysis after transplant failure of 3,521 patients from 2000 to 2020. While 38% of the patients were female, 12 months after transplant failure, 14% were using PD and 12% were using home HD. Males were 55% less likely to choose PD after transplant failure and 66% more likely to choose home HD. These disparities were greater in low SES regions.

  • Higher Serum Phosphorus Predicts More Residual Function Loss—in Men Only

    A retrospective analysis of 1,245 CAPD patients followed for up to 11 years divided participants into tertiles based on their baseline serum phosphorus levels. One third of patients lost residual renal function (RRF) during the study, and those with the highest baseline phosphorus levels had a 51% higher risk of RRF loss than those in tertiles 1 and 2 combined. The risk of RRF loss was significantly higher for men.

  • Gender and Malnutrition in PD

    Do hypoalbumineumia, overhydration, inflammation, and cardiovascular risk affect men and women on PD differently? A small study (N=26 men and 28 women) with comparable BMI found more fluid overload, inflammation, and heart risk in women with low serum albumin than in men. Read the abstract.
