  • Home HD with a B. Braun Machine

    A small, retrospective study compared data from 27 patients using a B. Braun Dialog HD machine for home HD to 36 using a NxStage System One. The B. Braun had significantly higher spKt/V), standard weekly Kt/V, and urea reduction rate, despite significantly shorter treatments at higher UFRs. Of lab data, lower serum bicarbonate levels with B. Braun were the only significant difference.

  • Qualitative Research Review: Barriers, Facilitators of Home HD

    In an analysis of 13 studies, lack of knowledge of home HD led a pack of patient and healthcare professional-identified barriers—along with lack of confidence and concerns about partner burden. Healthcare system and home suitability barriers were barriers—while a supportive, community atmosphere and quality of life benefits were motivators.

  • Cardiovascular Outcomes Compared in PD vs. Home HD

    Data from almost 69,000 patients in the USRDS who started PD or home HD to assess for rates of hospitalizations due to incident cardiovascular events (acute coronary syndrome, heart failure, stroke). While the unadjusted rate of cardiovascular events was higher in home HD than PD patients, the adjusted rates were lower for stroke and acute coronary syndrome. There was no difference in heart failure risk, but home HD was linked with a 22% lower adjusted risk of cardiovascular death.

  • PD vs. Home HD for Severe Infections

    In a Finnish study of 536 patients using home dialysis, the risk of a severe infection (C-reactive protein of 100mg/L or higher) in year 1 of CAPD was 35%, APD was 25% and home HD was 11%. Over a 5-year period, compared to home HD, the hazard ratio of severe infection for APD was 2.2 and for CAPD, 2.8. PD peritonitis accounted for the difference.

  • UK Target: 20+% on Home Dialysis

    Despite the many benefits of home therapies, PD and home HD remain underused. The UK now recommends a minimum 20% prevalence rate for home dialysis.

  • Better COVID Survival with PD and Home HD

    Among 1,336 people whose kidneys failed between March, 2020 and January, 2021, 13.12% (n=178) contracted COVID-19. Of these, most (n=139) did standard in-center HD, and 33 (3.87%) died. On PD, 39 people developed COVID, and 1 (0.81%) died. On home HD, there were zero cases of COVID and no deaths. Five transplant patients developed COVID, with a mortality rate of 1.47%.

  • Home HD Patients Grasp Fluid Management Better than In-Center Ones

    Compared to 839 people on in-center HD in the UK from six clinics, 99 receiving home HD had significantly more knowledge about fluid management and signs and symptoms of fluid overload. They also felt more in control and reported better adherence—though knowledge gaps remained.

  • Poorer Survival for Those Who Switch from Home to In-center HD

    Among 19,306 people who started HD in the ANZDATA registry from 2005 to 2015 and were treated for more than 90 days, those who started home HD and then went to in-center HD had significantly higher mortality than those who stayed at home. The reasons for this are not yet known.
